Bypass this one:
I've owned this unit for about a year now, and the printing quit the third month. The screen says "No black cartridge" or "Black cartridge empty". I put in 3 black cartridges in a row ($75.00) and it would not recognize them, and would not print. I called the factory and got a semi-english speaking young girl that was programmed to say "I'm terribly sorry to hear that." She said it at least a dozen times in a two minute conversation. When I explained that the black cartridge would not be recognized, she walked me through the installation procedure AGAIN. I put in my last black cartridge. The screen said "No black cartridge". She said, "OK, is there anything else I can do for you today?" I said "IT STILL DOES NOT WORK!" She said "I'm terribly sorry to hear that. Is there anything else I can do for you today?" I have 4 yellow, 4 magenta, and 4 blue cartridges if someone would like them. I'm out of black. The phone part still works, but the screen beeps all day long and says NO BLACK CARTRIDGE!". I leave it on to remind myself never to buy a Brother product again. Someday I will get a boat, and this unit will become my $425.00 ($225 + $200 for ink) anchor.Brother MFC-845cw Color Photo Inkjet Flatbed All-in-One with 5.8GHz Cordless Handset

This machine just EATS ink - stay away:
I bought this planning to do a modest amount of printing, as well as a small amount of copying & faxing. I liked the wireless capability. Never used the phone except to fax. After only a month, I needed to replace the ink cartridges, having printed less than 50 pages! I subsequently learned that if you leave it turned on, it routinely and regularly eats its way through your ink supply. After spending about $75 for new cartridges, I decided to use it only for faxing (printing only a confirmation page) - whenever i was not faxing it was turned off. After 6 months, it's running out of ink again!! I'm replacing it and dumping it in the recycle bin. It's strictly a device sold to generate ink sales. Trust me, any positive reviews here were either written by Brother employees, or by people who did not have it long enough to realize they'd been had. The worst piece of computer equipment I've ever bought - lesson learned - nothing from Brother, ever again.

Keep looking!:
I bought this all in one to replace an old HP all in one. I had hoped to have more options and updated photo features. As it turns out, it will not take my photo cards, will not save to the computer, does not provide software with phot transfer capabilities. I could not scan to PDF files for a newsletter I produce. The phone is mediocre and the fas is disappointing. It has used a great amount of in, which it the biggest cost of owning any office printer. All in all, I wish I had purchased the cannon I debated on getting.;(

Great buy:
I bought this product for $90 (all inclusive) on the net. For that price, it is a great buy. Setup - From ripping the box open to getting all the features working, took me about 45 minutes. This is reasonable considering the several cool features offered by this little MFC ! Size - Best thing about this product is that it packs in many features in a small size like those ugly looking Canon or Epson printers. It is only as tall as my home-theatre receiver - so I could just stack it in my entertainment center, next to my other applicances. Scanner - I wanted a flat-bed scanner & it didn't dissapoint me. Wireless - I reviewed HP 7280 as an alternative but was turned off by other reviews of how cumbursome it is to setup wireless connectivity. This one was very simple. All it took me was 10 minutes to get the wireless connection working flawlessly. Print Quality - I know that HP & Canon offer better printing quality but their ink cartrides are also very expensive. On the other hand Brother ink is reasonable and the print quality is good enought for your regular printing needs. Photo - I was very happy with the photo printed from this printer although it took about a minute to print one copy. Handset Telephone - Simple design, great sound quality Overall - I am very happy with my purchase. This is a printer for you if you have occasional printing and scanning needs. I reviewed other Brother MFCs but there were not worth the extra cost.

Good At First, Then Not Really Good At All:
All of the good reviews for this product are from users who reviewed it when it was still new, or from "reviewers" who have actually never used it for anything other than a demo. The features and specifications of the Brother MFC-845cw sound impressive, and indeed, at first blush, it is a very nice machine. However, the experience quickly goes sour. First, the Brother MFC-845cw uses a LOT of ink. I mean A LOT of ink. The specs say something like 400 pages. We all know that printer manufactures lie about their ink yields by quoting based on 5% coverage of a piece of paper, but the Brother's ink yields are laughable even by those standards. You'll be lucky to get 40 8 x 10 color graphics printed. That's graphics, not photos which would no doubt be less. Second, since the Brother uses up ink at a ridiculous rate, you might want to try and print in black and white. Nice try. If the Brother thinks an ink cartridge is empty, YOU CANNOT PRINT whether you need the color or not. In other words, if you want to print a black and white text document but the Magenta ink is empty, it won't print, even in black and white. It will just show you how to change the ink on the little screen. So, this better only be a backup printer or else you'll have to run out and buy ink RIGHT NOW in order to print. Third, it lies about the ink levels. I store my Brother MFC-845cw unplugged (you'll see why below). When I turned it off, it says "Cyan Ink Low". When I turn it on the next time, it says "Cyan Empty" and now it won't print, despite the fact that I have not printed a single page since it said empty. Lest you think the ink dried up or something, it was less than 12 hours later when I turned it back on! Fourth, it won't turn off. Seriously. If you turn it off, the screen goes dark, and you think it is off. Only, it isn't. Whenever it decides it is time, it turns itself on and starts "cleaning" the ink cartridges. They say it is to keep everything running smoothly, but when I say off, I mean off. Clean them and then shut down, would be proper, but that isn't what it does. So, if it is in your office and you are in the middle of an important meeting, it can turn itself on and start the fairly loud process of cleaning all of the ink cartridges. There is no way to turn this off. The only thing you can do to keep it from happening is to unplug it. But, don't even think about doing it once it starts the cleaning process, because then it will doubly clean itself because of the earlier "error." By the way, cleaning, means wasting a little bit of ink to keep the ink near the tips fresh. Fifth, while the copy and fax buttons do exactly what you think they would, the scan button is worthless unless you insert a memory card to scan to. Even with the scanner configured, on the network, and responding properly to printing and configuration from Brother's own software, I have yet to make the scan button scan anything over the network. If I use the scan utility in the CCB program that you have to install, it scans over the network just fine. So unless you plan to set this on your desk, your scanning process for a non-feeder thing like a book will be to place the document, go back to your computer, click scan, then wait until the scan is complete, go back to the scanner, place the next document, go back to the computer, click the scan button. Lastly, setup can be very difficult. All of the supposedly automatic features failed. Then, it printed, but would not scan despite the ControlCenter3 program being able to see an do everything else on the device. I used to be a systems engineer, so I persevered and finally got it working through a bunch of configuration band-aids and duct tape (including using a fixed IP address). Non-techie types will have a tough time getting the device running if they aren't lucky enough for the "auto" mode to get it up and running. Frankly, I got this as a deep discount close out product and that is the only reason I am no livid. If you are thinking about buying this device or any of its related versions, don't. There are much better options and any extra money you spend will be quickly recovered via the cost of ink which cannot be any higher than this device. So very not recommended.
