Finding soft pillowcases and sheets:
I've also been shopping for the silky soft pillowcases and sheets and noticed comments about the lack of softness on nearly every brand, style and thread count. Back in the old days of the 70's, our pillowcases and sheets were smooth as silk because they were "MERCERIZED". Sheets and pillowcases were marketed as mercerized and it was included on the label. Mercerization is a process of washing the fabric or thread under tension (to prevent shrinkage) with sodium hydroxide and an acid neutralizer which not only gives it a smooth luster and increases strength but reduces lint, improves mildew resistance and increases affinity for dye so it won't fade or bleed. In the 70's, we could buy sheets and pillowcases which were also "Pre-shrunk," "Cotton blend" and "no wrinkle, no iron". The current name for mercerization is supposedly "pearl cotton" which has a polyester core in each thread. I still have some old sheet sets from that era which were soft and smooth as silk and most are blends. However the old sets are long since threadbare and only the pillowcases are still usable. The fad for 100% cotton did not occur until the 80's.... and since then, everything made with 100% cotton wrinkled miserably and most were not preshrunk. I also would like to find those wonderful mercerized sheets again. again. In the past 15 years, I have not seen any sheets or pillowcases which show any hint of mercerization or any of the other features. I originally thought it was the thread count so I bought every thread count, every fabric and type available to find that silky smooth and softness we used to enjoy.... without any luck. I have even found some satins to be less than smooth and there is nothing smooth about sateen's either. Silk is nice but stains, rips easily and is expensive. Another problem with satins and silks is keeping them on the bed since they are quite slippery. While this does not solve our problem in finding those soft, silky smooth sheets and pillowcases... perhaps it might lend some understanding on why we are not finding them on the market anymore. Maybe some of these manufacturers will take a moment to start listening to the hundreds of complaints like this just on Amazon alone. In the meantime, we should probaly check to see if there are any sheets and pillowcases which are listed as "pearl cotton" since that is the new term for mercerization. JC Penny's used to be the source for those soft sheets of yesteryear.

Nice Sheets and Fair Price:
These sheets are VERY soft and comfortable and the price is in the fair range. If you have one of the new Deep, thick matresses then these sheets will do the job and then some. Might find better price if you search longer though. I would buy them again.

Not quite what I would have liked.:
I thought that 400 thread count Egyptian cotton would make a soft, smooth, silky sheet. This sheet really isn't. It can be quite coarse. I have slept in lovely smooth sheets at quality motels and really would like to know where to buy sheets like that. This one isn't it. Also, most companies send return information along with the packaged item. This company did not do that. If I wanted to return it, I had to look up return information on the website. I just thought that made it slightly more inconvenient. Two things I did like about the sheet were: The color is fabulously white--a pure, true white. It looks so clean. Also, the fitted sheet was deep enough to fit our mattress.
