cheaply made: I agree with several of the other reviewers, it is very cheaply made but my 4 year old doesn't seem to mind she uses it with all of her other polly pocket princesses. The swing is definitely the worst part of it and the furniture doesn't really sit very well on the upper level of the castle. I probably wouldn't have bought it for a Christmas gift if I had read the reviews before. It's not really worth the money!
Very charming: This is a very charming toy, with lots of play value. My daughter (4) adores it. Yes, the swing is tough to keep together/stay hung, yes, it has lots of tiny parts (tea cups, tea kettle, flower vase, etc.), yes, the floor won't always stay flat...BUT... it sparks such imagination, it's easy to pretend it's a full castle complete with outdoor walkway, and all the elements are there for a full-on princess fantasy to unfold, including two staircases and a mini balcony. I haven't had any problems at all folding it up, it's really very simple and you just have to fold it the right way; and most of all, my daughter loves this so much. As for the small parts... that seems par for the course for many toys for young girls, they seem to love things in miniature, but my daughter brings other stuff in from her dollhouse, from her Littlest Pet Shop stuff... it all becomes interchangeable in this fantasy world even if it doesn't fit!
Perfect for storage challenged play rooms.: Other reviews I have read about this toy say things like "cheap", "flimsy" "hard to use". I must agree to a point. The fold out pieces do have a tendency to come apart, but they snap back in to place fairly easily. With the exception of the swing. The swing will, most likely, pop apart with in the first 5 uses and is a real stinker to put back together. Honestly, I gave up after the 3rd time it fell apart, but my daughter doesn't miss it much. In fact, I bought this toy for my daughter Christmas 2007 and she loved it and played with it constantly. So often that it was starting to wear out, so I bought it again for Christmas 2008. She was overjoyed! She is 5 and was 4 for the first one. She loves this castle, and the little dolls that come with it, so much that she won't allow me to get rid of the old one, she wants the new castle owner to have neighbors. Anyway, if you and your child have the patience to snap it back together now and then, it's a perfect doll house because it folds up and slides on a shelf with the books! Quick advise: It has some very small accessories, so be careful if you have small kids. Also, it will be easier to store all the little extra accessories and the dolls in a tupperware (I use the cheap equivalent - Ziplock) container. This will also help the fold out parts to stay together better since storing the small stuff in the castle can force the parts to separate when folded up.
Expected Better Quality From Disney: My 3-year-old daughter wanted this product so badly for Christmas. It was expensive but Santa delivered. I am thoroughly disappointed with it and I hope Santa reassigned the elves responsible for construction of this toy! It so cheaply made and never folds up properly...staircases and pillars bend, the swing has never worked (it fell off when we opened it for the first time) and the floor keeps popping up once it's opened. She still plays with it but gets frustrated that it doesn't "work". There is a Little Tikes version of a castle similar to this...I believe it's Cinderella and the figures are short with snap-on clothing. We have that one too and, not only is it better quality, the price is (or was at Christmas) better. I'd take the Little Tikes version over this one any day!
Disney is not setting a good quality track record: As with other non Mattel Disney toys, this looks better in pictures than actually playing with it. I'm not sure what happened with Disney quality, but nearly every Disney item we own breaks easily and is of poor quality. Like other reviewers, we had the same issues with the clip that holds it together just falling off. There are a LOT of little pices, great for choking on, stepping on, or simply losing. The swing breaks easily and is a real pain to get back together. The prince's cloak never stays on. The pillar doesn't stay up and the pieces don't fold correctly...I could go on.
